Questions Before You Begin
Is being a doula a good career choice?
There has never been a more exciting time to enter the field of birth work. As more families recognize the value of professional doula support, and as insurance and public programs expand access to doula services, the demand for trained birth professionals continues to grow.
A successful doula career requires more than completing a certification. The field is changing, and the doulas who thrive will be the ones who learn how to provide meaningful, professional services throughout the childbearing year, not only during labor.
How much does the training cost, and are payment plans available?

Will I get a certificate?
Yes. Upon successfully completing the certification requirements, you’ll receive a printable training certificate from Birth Coach Method.
How long does it take to complete the program and earn the certificate?
You can complete the requirements for your doula certificate in approximately seven months. Because students have different schedules and birth opportunities, most students complete all certification requirements within one year of registration.
How will I get the clients I need to support to earn my certificate?
You won’t be left to figure this out on your own. We will support you in reaching out to your community until you enroll the two clients you need toward your certificate.
Will I learn how to establish my doula practice?
Absolutely. We believe professional doula training should prepare you not only to support births, but to build a career.
You’ll receive practical information and strategies for launching your practice, including:

- Liability insurance
- Advertising
- Networking
Does the training certificate meet insurance reimbursement requirements?
Our training meets the educational requirements for doula practice in California and Massachusetts, including the core training topics required under the Medi-Cal training pathway.
A certificate is only one part of the enrollment process. Additional requirements can include CPR, HIPAA training, birth experience, provider enrollment, and payer-specific credentialing or contracting.
Because reimbursement requirements vary by payer, always confirm the current requirements directly with the insurance company or reimbursement program you plan to work with. Training prepares you for professional requirements; enrollment and reimbursement are separate processes.
Do I have to work as a traditional on-call doula?
No.
There is more than one way to be a doula. You can build a traditional birth-support practice, join a group practice, work with an agency, develop a prenatal-focused service, integrate coaching into your work, or create a combination that fits your strengths and lifestyle.
The future of doula care is not one-size-fits-all. Neither should your doula career be.
